Infrared Coagulation (IRC) Treatment for Hemorrhoids

There are several surgical options for treating hemorrhoids. One option that is typically well tolerated is Infrared Coagulation, or IRC.

IRC, also called photocoagulation, is commonly used to treat Grade I and Grade II internal hemorrhoids that are persistently bleeding or painful. Infrared Coagulation most often is performed at the time of a colonoscopy in a physician’s office while the patient is still sedated.

During the procedure, tissue at the base of the hemorrhoid is exposed to pulses of infrared radiation through a small probe. This causes clotting, or coagulation, of the veins above the hemorrhoid. This shrinks the hemorrhoid by reducing or eliminating blood flow through it. The patient may feel a sensation of heat very briefly, but it is generally not painful.

Most patients are able to return to their normal lifestyle the same day as the IRC procedure. Some patients experience slight spot bleeding for a few days afterward. Heavy straining or lifting should be avoided and aspirin should not be taken for a few days.

For patients that have more than on hemorrhoid, which is quite common, two or three visits may be necessary to successfully treat all of the hemorrhoids. No more than four treatments within a six-month period are considered medically necessary.

Although major complications are rare, they can occur. These complications include perforation of the esophagus, stomach, duodenum, small bowel or colon. Bleeding following removal of polyps, infection, cardiac or respiratory arrest related to sedation. Millions of patients have been treated with Infrared Coagulation. Studies show that hemorrhoids treated with IRC generally do not recur. A sensible diet, moderate exercise and proper bowel habits will also help.
