Thrombosed Hemorrhoids

Many people, including healthy people, have hemorrhoids. When someone refers to a "hemorrhoid", generally they are referring to the symptoms. These symptoms typically result when the submucosal vascular tissue becomes enlarged, inflamed, prolapsed or thrombosed. This vascular tissue, also known as a vascular cushion, is a normal part of the structure of the anal canal.

Thrombosed hemorrhoids are hemorrhoids which occur outside of the rectum, around the anus, that have formed blood clots within the vascular cushion. This makes the lump extremely tender and can be very painful during a bowel movement, walking or even sitting. A thrombosed hemorrhoid can also result in itching and swelling.

Thrombosed hemorrhoids, which can be soft like raisins or hard like frozen peas, can be can be seen by the naked eye and/or felt during an examination. Because they involve the strangulation or plugging of a vein that is just under the skin, thrombosed hemorrhoids most commonly turn blue.

Although they can be very painful, thrombosed hemorrhoids typically do not require surgery. Effective treatments include warm baths, hemorrhoidal creams and the addition of more fiber in the diet which will soften the stools. If medical intervention is required, there are 3 preferred methods for dealing with thrombosed hemorrhoids:

The usual treatment for a thrombosed hemorrhoid is drainage or removal of the clot or the entire section of affected vein can be removed. This procedure can generally be performed in a doctor's office.

- Another form of removal is rubber band ligation. A small rubber band is positioned around the thrombosed hemorrhoid. This will cut off the blood flow to the hemorrhoid, causing it to shrivel away.

- Infrared coagulation uses infrared light and electric current to burn off the thrombosed hemorrhoid.

Thrombosed hemorrhoids, although frequently uncomfortable, generally do not indicate a more serious problem and generally will go away on their own if treated properly at home. If they cause considerable discomfort they can quite often be removed at a doctor's office during a short appointment.
